David J. Humphreys
David J. Humphreys served as president of the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), of Reston, Virginia, from January 1, 1979 until January 30, 2006, following ten years of service as RVIA's outside legal counsel. Since retiring from RVIA Humphreys has been practicing law and acting as a consultant to various organizations including RVIA. During his presidency, Humphreys was the leading spokesman for the RV industry and a popular interview guest, he has appeared on television and radio shows from coast to coast explaining the advantages associated with RV travel. In recognition of his leadership and numerous accomplishments, Humphreys was given the RV industry's highest honor, the Distinguished Service to the RV Industry Award, in 1977. In 1981, he was awarded the industry's National Legislative Award and in 1997, he was inducted into the RV Industry Hall of Fame. Humphreys was the leading force in the creation of the American Recreation Coalition (ARC) in 1979, a nonprofit, Washington-based federation of more than 100 recreation-related associations and companies active in government policy-making on recreation issues, and has served since as chairman of its board of directors. In 2001, ARC's members honored Humphreys with the prestigious Sheldon Coleman Great Outdoors Award in recognition of his more than two decades of service as a central player in national policy matters affecting recreation, travel and tourism. He has been active for many years in the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA), the umbrella organization for all segments of the travel and tourism industry. He has been a member of TIA's Board of Directors since 1985 and was its national chairman from 1990 to 1991. He has chaired the compensation committee through two retiring and incoming TIA presidents. Humphreys received the travel industry's highest honor in 1994 when he was inducted into the Hall of Leaders. He has also been a member of the board of directors of the American Highway Users Alliance (formerly Highway Users Federation), whose membership includes representatives of the oil, trucking, automobile, and tire industries. Humphreys is a member of the bar in the District of Columbia, Virginia, and West Virginia and is admitted to practice before all federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. He was born in Scranton, Pa., and attended high school and college in Baltimore, Maryland. He earned his law degree from Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. A commercial pilot and certified flight instructor, Humphreys and his wife, Peggy, have five children and reside in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. |
