Today in Interstate History

At a news conference, President Dwight D. Eisenhower was asked about retired U.S. army major general J.S. Bragdon and his efforts to examine how the Interstate Highway System was being administered. Eisenhower's cautious response reflected how the Bragdon Committee's work had been generating controversy (see January 23). "What I was really trying to find out from General Bragdon is what are we doing and does it seem to accord with the law and the legislative history," Eisenhower explained. "I have not thought of putting this out, because it's a matter between General Bragdon and myself."
