Today in Interstate History

The Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Bridge.

June 23, 1964

The Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Bridge, a part of the Interstate System that carries I-66 over the Potomac River between Virginia and the District of Columbia, was officially opened to traffic. The first vehicles to travel across the 3,026-foot-long bridge were antique automobiles led by a car that carried members of the 26th president's family.
