Today in Interstate History

June 28, 1969

A ceremony was held for the opening of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge's lower deck. That structure was built at the same time as the upper deck, which had been in use since 1964, but held in reserve until it was needed. Those attending the latest ceremony at that New York-based Interstate System bridge, which carries I-278 between Staten Island and Brooklyn, included U.S. Public Roads Director Ralph Bartelsmeyer and master builder Robert Moses.
