Today in Interstate History

Interstate 70 near Topeka, Kansas.

September 26, 1956

The Koss Construction Company began paving a section of U.S. 40 – now I-70 – a few miles west of Topeka, Kansas, about a month after the state's highway commission had awarded that contract under the provisions of the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 (see August 31). That was the first paving effort to use Interstate System funds. During the ceremony attended by representatives from both the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads and Koss Construction Company to mark that milestone, First District State Highway Commissioner Ivan Wassberg wrote "9-26-56" in the fresh concrete.
