Maryland Governor J. Millard Tawes discussed his state's plans for working on I-495 (The Capital Beltway). According to Tawes, the State Roads Commission was aiming to complete Maryland's portion of the Interstate route in 21 months. Two segments on the Maryland side -- one between Georgia Avenue and University Boulevard in Montgomery County and the other connecting Indian Head Highway to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge -- were already opened to traffic. The final portion would officially make its debut about 23 months later (see August 17).
