Today in Interstate History
October 2, 1999Francis C. "Frank" Turner, a one-time FHWA administrator and leading figure in the history of the Interstate System, died at the age of 90. FHWA Administrator Kenneth R. Wykle, in a subsequent e-mail message to his staff, emphasized the key role Turner played in developing that highway network. Wykle noted, "He is regarded as one of the 'fathers' of the Interstate Highway System and was integral in establishing the Highway Trust Fund and the current system of federal-state highway funding." |
