There were strong concerns raised, at a Washington, D.C.-based meeting of the American Society of Civil Engineers, about the Eisenhower Administration possibly seeking to curtail urban links in the Interstate System due to high costs. Bernard Hillenbrand, executive director of the National Association of County Officials, spoke on behalf of his organization's membership when he said that such curtailments would be "tragic." District of Columbia Highways Director Harold Aitken, likewise addressing the group, agreed with Hillenbrand.
