A bipartisan group of seven governors -- four Republicans and three Democrats -- made known its consensus that the United States needed a new Interstate System. The governors, who served on the Highway Committee of the United States Governors' Conference, signified their support for such a highway network during an all-day private meeting with Secretary of Commerce Sinclair Weeks and several White House aides.
