Today in Interstate History

Secretary of Commerce Sinclair Weeks.

November 7, 1956

Secretary of Commerce Sinclair Weeks, in the wake of rumors that he would be retiring to private life after that year's elections, once again promoted the recently inaugurated plans for the Interstate System. Weeks, in talking about that highway network, made clear his determination to stay on as secretary and guide what he had characterized on other occasions as "the greatest public works undertaking in the world's history." As it turned out, Weeks would remain in the position for about another two years.
