Today in Interstate History
November 13, 1975A 14-mile segment of I-68 in western Maryland, stretching between Keyser's Ridge and the West Virginia border, was opened to traffic. In addition, a 27-mile portion of that highway on the West Virginia side -- extending to the city of Morgantown -- was dedicated. Those sections have become key parts of I-68, which is one of the few mainstream Interstate routes not directly serving a metropolitan area. The highway is also noteworthy because it closely parallels the historic National Road, which was built in that region during the early 1800s. |
