Today in Interstate History
November 14, 1963A little over a week before his tragic assassination, President John F. Kennedy participated in the dedication ceremony for the Maryland Northeastern Expressway-Delaware Turnpike. That route consists of 49 miles of I-95 on the Maryland side and 11 miles of that highway in Delaware. The ceremony marked the only time that a president has attended an Interstate opening. A video on the ceremony can be found here. That following spring, Maryland officially renamed its Northeastern Expressway the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway in honor of the slain president (see April 7). |
