Today in Interstate History

Secretary of Commerce Weeks.

November 17, 1955

Secretary of Commerce Sinclair Weeks, speaking to reporters at President Dwight D. Eisenhower's farm in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, said that the administration was "leaning toward" a pay-as-you-go financing plan for the Interstate System. That announcement signified a possible shift away from the administration's support for a bond-financing approach for the highway network. Weeks emphasized that, while Eisenhower himself had not explicitly endorsed the pay-as-you-go plan, he was open to cabinet-level discussions exploring that option. "He seemed to be quite acquiescent that we continue discussions and work something out," Weeks elaborated.
