Today in Interstate History
November 17, 1955Secretary of Commerce Sinclair Weeks, speaking to reporters at President Dwight D. Eisenhower's farm in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, said that the administration was "leaning toward" a pay-as-you-go financing plan for the Interstate System. That announcement signified a possible shift away from the administration's support for a bond-financing approach for the highway network. Weeks emphasized that, while Eisenhower himself had not explicitly endorsed the pay-as-you-go plan, he was open to cabinet-level discussions exploring that option. "He seemed to be quite acquiescent that we continue discussions and work something out," Weeks elaborated. |
