Today in Interstate History

President Ronald Reagan.

November 27, 1982

President Ronald Reagan, in a radio address, discussed the critical need to repair the nation's highways and bridges and in particular those within the Interstate System. He specifically announced his intention to ask Congress "to approve a new highway program that will enable us to complete construction of the Interstate System and at the same time get on with the job of renovating existing highways." Forty days later, Reagan would sign into law the Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1982 to help accomplish those aims (see January 6).
