Today in Interstate History
December 6, 2001The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation formally unveiled a total of 102 emergency call boxes that had been installed earlier in the year along a segment of I-81, which is the Keystone State's longest north-south Interstate route and officially known as the "American Legion Memorial Highway." The boxes, set up in Schuylkill and Luzerne Counties, were equipped with buttons for contacting police, firefighters, ambulances, and tow trucks. That part of the Interstate System was selected for the boxes, which were part of a $1.6 million Intelligent Transportation System project, due to the region's unusual susceptibility to thick fog, high winds, and other severe weather conditions. |
