Today in Interstate History

President Ronald Reagan.

December 7, 1982

The House of Representatives approved a five-cent-per-gallon gasoline tax increase to help repair the nation's highways and bridges, including those within the Interstate System. The tax was part of a larger measure providing, among other things, $4 billion each year for new construction on the Interstate System. The measure was supported by President Ronald Reagan (see November 27), who would ultimately sign it into law (see January 6).
