Today in Interstate History

December 8, 1990

The fourth Interstate route to be approved for Hawaii, originally assigned the temporary number H-1-A, was officially classified as H-201. That auxiliary route, a 4.1-mile-long segment of Moanalua Freeway/Star Route 78 on the island of O'ahu, had been upgraded to Interstate standards without Interstate construction funds. H-201 came into existence about three decades after the Federal Highway Administration had approved Hawaii's other Interstate highways (see August 29).
