Today in Interstate History
December 15, 1962Chicago's Dan Ryan Expressway, named after the president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners who had championed the route, made its debut. That Interstate highway was designated at first as I-90/94 from downtown in the Windy City to the Chicago Skyway Toll Bridge System (popularly known as the Chicago Skyway) and I-90 only from that latter point to the I-57 split. Ultimately, however, the designated routes for I-90 and I-94 were swapped. That resulted in I-94 following the entire expressway and I-90 branching off at the Chicago Skyway. The final segment of the Dan Ryan Expressway would be completed about eight years after its opening (see December 5). |
