Today in Interstate History
December 18, 1964The final section of I-95 between Richmond, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., was officially opened to traffic. The 22-mile segment, located between Fredericksburg and Quantico, was also the final section of that Interstate highway completed in Virginia. The half-hour dedication program was attended by Federal Highway Administrator Rex M. Whitton, Virginia Lieutenant Governor Mills E. Godwin, and State Highway Commissioner Douglas B. Fugate. Highlights of the ceremony included the cutting of a red, white, and blue ribbon and the firing of a two-round gun salute. Godwin proclaimed that I-95 would serve as "the great gateway from the North to the South of our land." |
