Today in Interstate History

A major step towards completing I-95 took place when a 33.8-mile-long segment between North Palm Beach and Fort Pierce was officially opened to traffic. The dedication ceremony for the segment included Florida Governor Bob Martinez driving a Ford Model AA truck. "Our north and south are linked," he proclaimed to approximately 200 state and local officials during the ceremony. That opening completed all of I-95, the main Interstate route along the Eastern Seaboard, except for a gap north of Philadelphia. Work on that part should be done by 2010.
