The final part of I-75, the first route in the Interstate System stretching from one end of the United States to another, was officially opened. The full route extends from Michigan to Florida, and its last section was a 17-mile segment in northwestern Georgia between Atlanta and the Tennessee border. At the dedication ceremony, U.S. Transportation Secretary Brock Adams and Governor George Busbee cut a red, white, and blue ribbon on the northbound lane. "This is a dream come true, a real Christmas present," proclaimed Busbee. "With the cutting of this ribbon it will be possible to drive all the way from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico without a single traffic light or stop sign."
