President Ronald Reagan issued a letter formally accepting Drew Lewis's resignation as U.S. Secretary of Transportation. In that letter, Reagan noted Lewis's efforts to repair and maintain the Interstate System (see March 1). Those efforts would ultimately help bring about the Surface Transportation Assistance Act (see January 6).
