Today in Interstate History

December 28, 1961

Approximately four years after construction on it had begun (see April 20), the Woodrow Wilson Bridge was officially opened to traffic. The dedication of that Interstate System bridge took place on what would have been the 105th birthday of Wilson, the 28th president and a pivotal figure in early federal-aid highway improvement efforts (see July 11). His widow Ellen Bolling Wilson was supposed to be the guest of honor at the dedication ceremony but died that same morning.
