Back to the Beginning: Washington, DC – June 29

Mary Eisenhower, granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and her son Merrill Eisenhower Atwater at the Zero Mile Marker on the Ellipse, the point from which the 1919 convoy departed.

Due to flooding in Washington, the final event of the convoy, the 50th Anniversary Arrival Ceremony was moved from the Ellipse – the point from which the 1919 convoy departed – to the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, located at 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. The ceremony took place from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Ampitheater.

Several hundred people welcomed the convoy, including members of Congress and business leaders. Participants in the Interstate Highway System Policy Forum and members of the Road Gang, a transportation booster group, also attended. This event marked the conclusion of the Celebrate the Interstate Convoy.
