Where the Rubber Met the Road: Ottawa, IL – June 24

The convoy pulling in to the Ottawa Test Site.

An Illinois state police escort will accompany the convoy from the Illinois state line to the Ottawa Test Site, also known as The National Test Road. This site is the location where AASHO (as AASHTO was then known) and federal officials conducted materials tests in the 1950s as the Interstate project was ramping up, producing surface formulas that were used for years to come in the construction of the Interstate System. Displays include a Korean War vintage deuce-and-a-half and ¾-ton semis – vehicles that were used at the test site in the 50s. A picnic lunch will be provided, sponsored by the Illinois Association of Highway Engineers.
